What You Could Learn from the 2012 IronMan Triathlon

On October 13, I watched with awe at some of the best athletes in the world compete in the 2012 IronMan Triathlon in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.  This isn’t your normal run of the mill triathlon series.  It’s one of the toughest and gruelling endurance contests that literally put you through the ringer and tests all of your physical abilities to a breaking point.

The main race that I refer to is the IronMan Triathlon Championships held annually in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.  This begs the question what’s possibly on your mind right now – as in, ‘Just what comprises the IronMan Triathlon Championship?’.

The IronMan Triathlon Championship Explained

What makes the Ironman Triathlon Championship so unique?  It’s mostly the fact that just like the Olympics, only the best athletes actually qualify to compete in the main event.  These athletes have competed in other series throughout the year in a bid to compete at the main event, so it’s one of the most elite events that are sought to be competed in the world over.

What Comprises the IronMan Triathlon Championship? According to WikiPedia, the main event is comprised of: “a 2.4 miles (3.86 km) open water swim in Kailua-Kona Bay, a 112 miles (180.25 km) bike ride across the Hawaiian lava desert to Hāwī and back, and a marathon (26 miles 385 yards, 42.195 km) run along the coast of the Big Island from Keauhou to Keahole Point and back to Kailua-Kona, finishing on Aliʻi Drive.

Imagine competing in this most gruelling of events and you are also only given 17 hours to actually complete the event.  The world record currently stands and held by Craig Alexander of Australia with a time of 8 hours, 3 min., 53 secs.  Can you now see why this is one of the world’s foremost endurance events?

The Inspiration

Training for my own half marathon this year, watching the IronMan seriously gave me the inspiration and encouragement to push on with my own fitness level. I’m sure they’re millions of viewers that watched the last IronMan that feel the exact same way.  It gave me the validation to be able to push on and set short goals for myself.  If one of these athletes can push themselves for hours on end to complete one of the world’s greatest endurance events, what’s stopping me and you from meeting our own goals?

I mean think about it, these athletes have trained for years and years just to be able to qualify and compete on of the world’s elite fitness stages showing their tenacity and their full strengths just to complete this event.

What We Can Take Away from IronMan In watching and analyzing the IronMan championships this year, I really believe we can learn a few things from it.  Namely, to always persevere and never give up in working towards what you’d like to accomplish in life.

Having the disclipline and faith that you’ll get there in the end, seasoned with some action will lead to awesome results.  Success leaves clues, so follow them and don’t bother re-inventing the wheel.
