Goals 101 – Career / Business Goals (Article 5 of 5)

Jun 23, 2009  |  under Financially Elite Blog  |  by Dwight Anthony

The fifth and last set of goals in this set of articles is possibly one of the most important goals that we can set to supplement our other goals. These are our Career or Business Focused Goals. We must be sure to set these in addition to our Financial goals as was discussed in an earlier article in this series. You may be asking yourself what is the main difference between our Financial goals and our Career / Business Focused Goals? The difference is elementary yet paramount in our success of goal setting objectives. Financial goals are basically what we would like to achieve financially in our lives like hitting a certain number e.t.c. Our Career / Business Focused goals are those that take our day-to-day business dealings and help to define our career. These can be set even if we are business owners or even employees of a major corporation. It makes no difference.

What is important is that we set these goals as soon as possible to define what we would like to picture as our ideal business dealings and way of making a living. Remember our end result and ultimate goal is to be financially free so we want to get there with class, not 14 hour days! What are some important benefits of setting our Career and Business Focused Goals? For Starters:

  • It helps us define the type of business we would like to be involved in
  • What would be our dream career?
  • What type of business minds would we like to surround ourselves with?
  • What type of business would give us ultimate joy in jumping up and looking forward to start work in the morning?
  • What path would get us to our dream of living financially free in the least possible time?

If you use the above points as guidelines, you will be able to create a template for your career and define who you will become in the world of business or other careers. Think long and hard before even putting pencil to paper. Know what you really want and take ACTION. Write these goals down as you finish or even read this article. Do not procrastinate or you may never get your framework completed for this important set of goals. There are a very small percentage of people that take real action in this world. Everyone else may know what to do but do nothing instead. In other words, they do not take action. Remember most regrets are usually from inaction (doing nothing) not action.

Ok, back to our goal setting exercise; now that you have a good idea of what your goals must be, take 10-15 minutes or so and write out. Even if you know you are stuck in a dead end job today. Please go ahead and start your positive journey to success. Let’s get started my friend and go down this street to a life of abundance and financial freedom. Your personal development relies on you setting your goals properly to give you a life map of how to get there. You wouldn’t drive in a new country without a map or a GPS right or are you content on going around in circles?

Now that we have a sense of the goals we want to set, we write our goals out in the present (positive) tense like we have already accomplished them. There have been studies to prove this is more effective to getting your subconscious on board to help you achieve your goals. So, for example do not write your goal like, “I would like to be a CFO of ABC Company and earn a comfortable six figure income.”, instead write, “I make a comfortable six figure income and I’m the CFO of ABC Company”. These are the criteria for writing your goals and make them more effective. Once you have your goals written out, put them where you will see them! You want to have them in front of you where you will them daily, better if at least twice a day. I’ve known people to print out their goals on business cards and look at them daily. Get started on writing down your Career and Business Focused set of goals. I would like to congratulate you on getting through these goal setting articles and please view all of my related articles written below on goal setting if you missed those as well.

Goals 101 – Health / Energetic Goals (Article 4 of 5)

Jun 20, 2009  |  under Financially Elite Blog  |  by Dwight Anthony

vegetablesThe fourth set of Goals that we will cover are Health / Energetic Goals.  It’s been said that a man can be wealthy, but if he doesn’t have his health, he has nothing.  So, having said that, is there any wonder that the most successful people in the world make their health their number one priorities?  You must have harmony and balance in your life to be truly successful.  Your Personal, Family/Relationship, and Financial goals must all be in congruent harmony to achieve a high level of health and energetic goals.  Why are Health / Energetic goals so important?  Think of  those that are the most energetic, healthy and enjoy life the most are those that take their health seriously.  Most don’t smoke, drink in moderation or not at all and exercise anywhere from 3 to 5 days a week religiously.  We live in a society where creature comforts such as plasma TV, Video games and smart phones have taken the place of good old fashioned getting out and getting some fresh air and exercise.

You must not only exercise and get out more often, you must train your eating habits. Sitting in an office cubicle for 12-hour days was never meant for how we are wired.  First, get yourself a healthy cookbook and buy groceries and lots of produce / vegetables to eat at home.  Not only will you be healthier but also you will save a fortune by eliminating eating out often.  Eating out all the time is not just tough on your diet; it affects your pocketbook very negatively as well.  If you are just starting out in exercise and you’ve been very inactive for a while, please do see your physician about exercising and get a physical performed as well.  Remember your health is your number one priority; you don’t want to be collapsing on the treadmill!

There’s been a study lately that Seventh Day Adventists tend to live longer than others simply based on their lifestyle and diet.  While I’m not a Seventh Day Adventist, and I’m not saying you should go out and become one, I do understand the medical study that was performed on this group.  The study found that because they cut out virtually almost all pork, red meat and absolved on smoke free and alcohol free living and keeping their bodies as ‘temples’, it has lead to an average lifespan of Adventists to around 85 years of Age!  To put this in perspective, the average lifestyle of man worldwide is only around 74 or so years of age.  What does this mean to us?  We must start eating properly, exercising and keeping active to keep our energy levels raised to keep us on track.

So, back to our Health / Energetic Goal setting plans, we want to set our Health / Energetic goals that will take us down the path to better health and fitness.  When we have these two things aligned, our energy level will soar and we will look forward to a more active lifestyle instead of forsaking it.

Now that we have a sense of the goals we want to set, we write our goals out in the present (positive) tense like we have already accomplished them.  There have been studies to prove this is more effective to getting your subconscious on board to help you achieve your goals. So, for example do not write your goal like, “I would like to lose 25 lbs. in order to be more healthy”, instead write, “I have lost 25 lbs. and feel like I’m in the best shape of my life”. These are the criteria for writing your goals and make them more effective. Once you have your goals written out, put them where you will see them! You want to have them in front of you where you will them daily, better if at least twice a day. I’ve known people to print out their goals on business cards and look at them daily.  Get started on writing down your Health / Energetic goals and get started on your Health and Fitness regime!

Goals 101 – Financial Goals (Article 3 of 5)

Jun 17, 2009  |  under Financially Elite Blog  |  by Dwight Anthony

The third set of goals that we should set are Financial / Business Goals. These can be pivotal to set because most people don’t set their set of financial goals and therefore life just hands them whatever they ask for, which is the same of nothing different. By putting our Financial / Business (Career) goals in front of us, we know the number that we are attempting to hit or what career path we want to take in our working life. If you don’t set Financial / Business goals, you might as well just hand your life over to an employer who will control every facet of your working career including income. When we have a steadfast plan to work by, we start to see results because we work off of a framework per say. Think of it this way, how many builders do you see constructing a building without a set of blueprints to complete the job? Nevertheless, Millions work this way when it comes to their own lives daily. No ‘blueprint’ or plan for his or her financial success and wonder why they keep getting moderate or dismal results.

Here’s what you need to do. Write out your Financial goals first. Make sure your goals are possible and attainable and make them realistic. For example, if you only make 30K per year, your financial goal is probably not prudent to hit the 1 Million dollar mark for the next year! Set it to something realistic like say 50K to 100K. If you can hit those marks, you can definitely even do better than that. Set your career path goals as well. Tired of being a secretary? Why not shoot for Executive Assistant and ask yourself how you get there. For your Financial / Business Goals, you definitely want to go ahead and choose possibly around 5 Goals maximum in that category. Write them out and use the S.M.A.R.T. system. The S.M.A.R.T system stands for Specific, Measureable, Attainable, Realistic and Traceable based. If you set any of your goals according to this method, your chances of reaching those goals are even greater, so start using the S.M.A.R.T. system of setting your goals today. The problem with people setting financial goals is that they tend to set them too high and they get discouraged and stop setting them. If you don’t hit your marks for that year, simply readjust your goals a little and try to hit those similar goals for another year.

Once you have this list of your Financial / Business goals, put a time frame on when you want to accomplish these goals. You want to put a deadline to your goal to make it more measurable. The strength of your subconscious kicks in when we set a deadline as well. It works toward what we want to accomplish in our goals. Make sure to date your goals as well, e.g. ‘My Financial / Business Goals for 2010’. Also, set out notes / criteria separate from your goals that will help you accomplish each item on your goal list. For example, item #1 on your Financial / Business goals list might be, “I have made $100,000”, and you might write down criteria separate from your list like ‘How to make your first $100,000.

Now that we have the time frame criteria for our personal goals, you want to write your goals in a certain type of STYLE. We want to write our goals in the present tense like we have already accomplished them. You write your goals like you have already accomplished them. There have been studies to prove this is more effective to getting your subconscious on board to help you achieve your goals. So, for example do not write your goal like, “I would like to make $100,000”. Instead, write, “I have made $100,000 this year”. These are the criteria for writing your goals and make them more effective. Once you have your goals written out, put them where you will see them! You want to have them in front of you where you will them daily, better if at least twice a day. I’ve known people to print out their goals on business cards and look at them daily. Following these guidelines will help you reach your goals in the best way.

Next article up will be how to set your Health / Energetic Goals.
